Remembering Columban Martyrs

Remembering the Seven, is a new documentary directed by Emma O'Brien that tells the story of seven Columban missionaries who were killed in 1950 at the beginning of the Korean War.

O'Brien, the great niece of Columban martyr Fr. Anthony Collier, is also the niece of Columban missionary Fr. Ray Collier, who currently works in Britain.

The documentary is wrapped around the personal story of O'Brien's great uncle, Fr. Tony Collier and recalls a unique time in history: The japanese occupation of Korea in the 1940s, the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the defeat and withdrawal of Japan from Korea following World War II, and the invasion of South Korea in 1950 by North Korea.

Throughout this time, Columban missionaries remained in their parishes and with their people in South Korea.

The seven priest who were martyred in Korea in 1950 were:

  • Fr. James Maginn
  • Fr. Tommie Cusack
  • Fr. Paddy Reilly
  • Fr. Frank Canavan
  • Monsignor Patrick Brennan, and
